Director of Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections, Charles Flanagan, Appointed Child Safety & Family Services Director

by on January 14, 2014

Back in November, it was revealed that Arizona’s Child Protective Services (CPS) department failed to investigate approximately 6,000 reports of child neglect and abuse over the past four years. As a response, Governor Jan Brewer announced in her recent State of the State address that she will eradicate Arizona’s CPS department and will replace it with a new division, Child Safety & Family Services.

New Director Appointed

Brewer went on to declare that she will appoint current director of the Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections, Charles Flanagan, as the new director of Child Safety & Family Services. Flanagan, who was appointed to his current position by Brewer in 2011, will report directly to the Governor after he takes over his new duties.

Who is Charles Flanagan?

Charles Flanagan has served as the director of AZ’s Department of Juvenile Corrections since July 8, 2011, prior to which he served as the Deputy Director of the Arizona Department of Corrections.  In his 27 years in the correctional industry, Flanagan has served as CEO of Correctional Industries, Work Force Development Administrator, and twice as a Warden at two separate prison complexes. Finally, Flanagan also has experience overseeing minors who are charged as adults in Arizona.

Community Involvement

During his time at the Arizona Department of Corrections, Flanagan administered career technical and academic education to inmates and focused on nurturing relationships with local community organizations, like the Douglas Arts and Humanities Association and Habitat for Humanity, just to name a few. He has been recognized many times over for his community involvement and service.

While it appears that Flanagan’s new position will certainly improve Arizona’s efforts to curb child abuse and neglect, he will surely be missed as the director of Arizona’s Department of Juvenile Corrections. We wish him the best and sure hope they can find someone of similar stature to fill his shoes.
